Greener with IT – travel at the speed of the light

When we think of ”Green IT” we often think of the drawbacks such as toxic waste and the energy consumption of electronics – serious issues when you consider that IT products consume about the same amount of energy as the worldwide aviation sector. But IT can also be part of the solution to our environmental and climate concerns.

We often forget that Green IT has an upside -  making life easier and also more energy efficient.  The PC has revolutionized the way we book travel, get work done and meet with customers and co-workers across the globe.  But we haven’t made full use of its potential to mitigate the threat to our climate. By air we can travel at a maximum of 1000 km per hour (600 mph). With smart use of technology we can travel virtually at the speed of light!

There is a huge opportunity to replace a large portion of business travelling by virtual meetings using video conference systems (VCS). The potential cost and time savings are significant. But as many of you know it is a great challenge to make the systems work. At TCO Development we are routinely using VCS for meetings with our international reps, customers and partners all over the world. So far the technology is immature and we, like many of you, are constantly on the lookout for better solutions. The proper hardware and infrastructure securing reliable and rapid transmission is often not there causing disruption and giving images of poor quality. How can we make the equipment easy to use so that we can start our meetings without the typical 15 min delay?

Tell us about your videoconferencing experiences. What works ? What doesn’t work? What have been the benefits / drawbacks for your company? Comments welcome as we explore ways to make technology part of the climate solution.
